Who do you call when your car doesn't start?

· Updated 12 October 2026

If you're parked somewhere safe, such as at home, at work or in a car park, start with your breakdown cover provider if you have one. If you don't, call a mobile jump start or battery service, or a local garage for faults that aren't battery-related. Have your location, registration and symptoms ready before you call.

First, are you safe?

This guide is for cars that won't start somewhere safe, such as a driveway, street or car park. If you've broken down on a motorway or busy road, follow the Highway Code first. Our guide who do I call when the car won't start on the road covers that.

Frequently asked questions

Will breakdown cover help if my car won't start at home?

Only if your policy includes home-start cover. Check before you call.

Should I keep trying to start it?

No. The RAC advises not to crank for more than about 5 seconds at a time, as this can overheat the starter.

How much does a mobile jump start cost?

Jump Start Car's jump start costs from £70. Confirm the price when you call 0333 567 1785.
