Yes, it can seem to happen without warning, but there are often small signs first: slower cranking, dimmer lights, flickering dashboard lights or a battery warning light. Repeated short journeys, cold weather, battery age, lights left on and charging faults are common causes. If the car won't start, check for damage before any jump start.
Why it feels sudden
A battery can hold just enough charge to start the engine on a mild day and then fail on a cold morning or after the car has been parked for a few days. The RAC lists extreme weather, battery age, repeated short journeys and vehicle faults as common causes of a flat battery.
Signs you may have missed
The RAC says the first thing most drivers notice is the engine cranking more slowly than normal. Other signs include:
- headlights looking dimmer than usual
- dashboard lights flickering
- electric windows moving slowly
- the battery or charging warning light coming on
If you've noticed any of these, get the battery and charging system tested before the car lets you down.
What to do now
- Switch off everything electrical: lights, heater, radio and chargers.
- Look at the battery. Don't jump start if it's leaking, cracked or badly corroded (RAC).
- If it looks undamaged, a correct jump start may get you going. See our clicking-noise guide if the starter just clicks.
- After a jump, drive normally for around 30 minutes if you can, then have the battery tested (RAC).
When a jump won't help
If the battery keeps going flat, the RAC says there is probably a battery or electrical-system problem that needs testing. A jump start only gets you moving. It doesn't fix the cause.
Frequently asked questions
Can a battery die overnight?
Yes. A battery that is already weak, or a light or accessory left on, can leave too little charge to start the car the next morning.
Does cold weather kill car batteries?
The RAC lists extreme weather as a common cause of flat batteries, and the RAC's cold-weather guide covers extra checks for winter starting.
Is it safe to jump start a battery that died suddenly?
Only if it isn't leaking, cracked or badly corroded. If it is damaged, don't jump it. Call for help.
